Course name: Textile physics and novel fibers

Course description:

Textile physics and novel fibers course focuses on the physical properties of textile materials (including textile fibers, yarns, and fabrics) and the relationships of the structures and properties of some novel fibers (including Antibacterial fibers, antistatic and conductive fibers, bio-based fibers and so on ).The course includes two parts:

Students will expect 50% of lectures and 50% of reading the corresponding papers or books.

Course objectives:

   This course focuses on the following aspects :

(1)             Explain the concept of the micro-structures of fibers and analyze their effects on fiber physical properties;

(2)             Describe the basic parameters for the physical properties of fibers, including mechanical, moisture absorption, thermal, electrical properties. Describe how to measure these parameters and analyze the relationship between the structures and these properties.

(3)             Explain the structure and the properties of major novel textile fibers including bio-based fibers, functional fibers fibers. Describe the properties of specialty fibers, functional fibers, and other newly developed novel fibers.

Successful completion of this course will help graduate students abroad master the knowledges characterizing the physical properties of textile materials. This course also provides graduate students abroad with a specialized in-depth study of novel textile fibers, which enable students to gradually build on their information on the preparation of novel textile fibers, for example the new fibers that will be studied by themselves.

Prerequisite:

The students are required to understand the fiber structures and their effects on fiber properties, know the characteristics and performances of the major fibers in textile processing, and firmly master the testing techniques of various textile fibers.

Teaching strategies:

    A variety of teaching strategies may be utilized in this course, including but not limited to, lecture, discussion, reading papers and so on.

Grading:

 Grades for this course are determined by the completion of the assigned paper.
